Summary
The University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland cares for around 30,000 patients each year, known for its patient-centered approach, specialized expertise, and state-of-the-art research. With a commitment to innovation, it aims to make hospital visits more comfortable and efficient for patients. A key focus is enhancing patient communication and navigation, led by the IT innovation team.
To achieve this, we have developed an app that streamlines appointment scheduling, significantly reducing no-shows and the costs associated with missed appointments. Additionally, the app offers seamless navigation from a patient's home to their appointment, with directions tailored to their choice of on-site or contactless registration. This forward-thinking approach transforms the patient journey, making visits smoother and more accessible.
Challenge
Combining individual modules that worked flawlessly on their own but had never been integrated in this way presented unique challenges, especially in pinpointing and resolving issues—a process that proved to be quite time-consuming. Nevertheless, the development team skillfully navigated these obstacles, demonstrating resilience and expertise.
Data privacy regulations and legal requirements for patient protection posed additional complexities. However, through close collaboration with the data protection officer, we successfully addressed these issues, ensuring that our innovative solution aligns with the highest standards of patient confidentiality and legal compliance.
Solutions
With an app powered by location-based services, we can tailor specific services to each patient’s situation and location in real-time, boosting the app’s impact and effectiveness.
As part of the app’s development, we completely reimagined processes that previously required in-person interactions, transforming them into seamless digital experiences. A prime example is patient registration, now facilitated through an E-Card and a video identification process similar to those used in banking. This approach brings a new level of convenience, allowing patients to connect easily while ensuring secure, streamlined access to care.
